Copy-trading leaderboards, ranked out of sample

Most leaderboards rank people on the period they were picked from, which rewards luck. These rank on later trades: choose on the record before a cutoff date, rank on the record after it. Every average shows how many trades stand behind it.

Key Facts

  • Members and insiders are chosen on trades entered before 2023-04-25 (25 April 2023) for Congress and 2026-05-29 (29 May 2026) for insiders, then ranked on trades entered after that date.
  • A Congress member needs at least 8 scored buys before the cutoff and 5 after it to appear. An insider needs 3 and 3.
  • Top of the Congress board: Pete Sessions, averaging 3.9% against the S&P 500 over 90 days across 7 buys after the cutoff.
  • A high rank on a short record is more likely luck than skill, so the table shows the count and the standard error next to every average.

Frequently asked questions

Why rank out of sample?

If you rank people on the same trades you used to pick them, the winners are partly just the lucky ones and the list flatters them. Ranking on later trades shows whether the past record carried forward.

Does a top spot mean I should copy this person?

No. It means their later buys beat the index on average over a small number of trades. Small samples swing widely. Read the trade counts and the standard error, and remember this is information, not advice.

How are ties and thin records handled?

People below the minimum trade counts before and after the cutoff are left off. The rest are sorted by their average excess return after the cutoff.
